Exposed Aggregate Concrete: Texture and Durability

Exposed aggregate shows the stones in concrete. Here is how it is made and why it is popular for drives and decks.

Exposed aggregate is concrete whose top layer of cement paste has been washed away to show the small stones within. The stones can be river rock, granite, quartz or colored pebbles, and the result is a natural, pebbly surface that is slip resistant and very durable. It is a favorite for driveways, pool decks and walkways.

The process is delicate. A chemical retarder is sprayed on the surface after finishing, and the next day the top layer is washed or brushed away at just the right time. Too early and the stones come loose, and too late the paste will not wash away. Sealing protects the stones and the color, and helps stop them from loosening over the years.
