Stamped concrete imitates stone, brick and wood. Here is how patterns, colors and release agents work together.
Stamped concrete is pressed with rubber mats while it is still workable, which leaves the look of stone, brick, tile or wood. Popular patterns include ashlar slate, cobblestone, running bond brick and wood plank. Color is added to the mix, and a second color, called a release agent, is rubbed on the surface to add depth and a natural, variegated look.
The pattern is only part of the result. Stamping must happen at the right moment, joints should follow the pattern, and a sealer protects the color and the surface. Stamped concrete lasts well, but it needs resealing every few years to keep its look. Because the work is skilled, results vary, so ask to see samples and photographs from real jobs.
